The current Ebola outbreak continues to place significant pressure on healthcare systems and communities already managing other endemic diseases with similar symptoms. Timely and accurate diagnosis is critical to helping healthcare professionals identify the infections quickly, support appropriate care, and limit further transmission.
bioMérieux is working closely with health authorities and partners in Africa to expand access to diagnostic testing and strengthen local laboratory capacity. This includes the Ministries of Health in Rwanda and Uganda, as well as the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in support of the response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Most recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) granted Emergency Use Listing (EUL) for the BIOFIRE® Global Fever Special Pathogens Panel. The WHO EUL serves as an international reference, providing an additional pathway for health authorities, international organizations, and procurement partners to consider the panel for outbreak response and preparedness.
The BIOFIRE® Global Fever Special Pathogens Panel enables simultaneous testing for 16 pathogens from a single whole blood sample in approximately one hour. The panel includes detection of Bundibugyo ebolavirus, the strain responsible for the current outbreak, and helps differentiate Ebola from other causes of acute febrile illness with similar symptoms, enabling faster clinical decision-making and more efficient use of limited healthcare resources.
To continue supporting response efforts and strengthen laboratory capacity, bioMérieux has provided 4,630 BIOFIRE® Global Fever Special Pathogens tests since the beginning of the outbreak. Instruments have also been deployed. bioMérieux is providing on-site training for local laboratory professionals to support the quality use of the technology and reinforce long-term capabilities.
